Morangup Research Feedback
A revised survey was sent to 290 Morangup residents in February 2008, after it was identified that these community members tend to utilise Gidgegannup for schooling, recreation and shopping. By the deadline a 17.2% response rate had been achieved.
The results provided some interesting insights into the Morangup lifestyle and their reliance or otherwise on Gidgegannup as their closest retail and leisure centre, including:
- 45% of respondents moved to Morangup for the country lifestyle, while 29% were seeking a large or acreage block, 20% wanted to be away from the city and suburbia, and 18% peace and quiet
- 29% of the residents spend their leisure time in the Morangup-Gidgegannup area socialising, 24% bushwalking, 16% horse riding, 16% playing other sports (with 7% swimming and 4% cycling) and 13% doing passive hobbies such as bird watching, photography, yoga, etc.
- In terms of activities undertaken outside the Morangup-Gidgegannup area, 90% went shopping, 82% ate out and 69% went to the movies. Midland/Guildford was their main destination for these activities.
- Morangup residents tend to do little shopping in Gidgegannup, with around 2 in 3 purchasing their newspaper there. Petrol, major grocery and household shopping are mainly undertaken in Midland / Guildford.
- 58% of respondents wanted a chemist in Gidgegannup, 54% an IGA, 54% a pub/tavern, 48% a fruit and veggie shop and 46% a butcher. 30% would also like to see the introduction of a Woolworths or large supermarket chain.
- 38% of residents would also like a gym, 36% a cinema, 33% a swimming pool, 33% a skateboard park, 26% an indoor sports facility, 26% a library, 24% a seniors centre and 21% a children’s playground
- 36% of residents would use public transport once a week or more often. This was evident by the fact that more than 4 in 5 respondents were travelling 15 minutes or more to work.
Overall however, 75% of respondents would like to see Gidgegannup develop, with a preference between 6, 12 and 20 streets of housing around a main street and town centre. This compares to 58% of the Gidgegannup community who had a preference for 6-12 streets of development.
The research has outlined the fact that Morangup residents felt that Gidgegannup would benefit from having more amenities and services available but wanted it to retain a small / less crowded and country lifestyle feel to the town. This theme was shared with its Gidgegannup counterparts as well.
Residents also indicated that other localities such as Mundaring, Manjimup, Bridgetown, Toodyay and Donnybrook were good examples of town centres that Gidgegannup could ultimately become like in terms of streetscape and character.
Like their Gidgegannup counterparts, overall the Morangup respondents to the survey indicated an interest in developing Gidgegannup and this is the focus that Port Bouvard Ltd now hopes to share with the community and relevant government departments.
