Sustainability Initiatives

Port Bouvard Ltd is committed to a model of development that exceeds local community expectations and aspirations with regards to sustainability.  Surveys of residents show that sustainability is considered a vital part of Gidgegannup’s future, with high percentages of respondents supporting the following  initiatives:

  • 92% rain water tanks;
  • 82% roof insulation;
  • 78% retention of native gardens;
  • 73% waterwise gardens and grey water reuse;
  • 70% passive solar design and  water efficient water appliances; and
  • 62% solar power or alternative energy.

The following sustainability options are being considered for the planned development:

  • Climate-sensitive building design incorporating orientation and internal lay-out, cross-ventilation and airflow, the use of thermal performance materials and insulation, shading of external walls and windows, and enhanced interface with outdoor areas.
  • Water efficiency initiatives including rainwater harvesting; use of high water efficiency star-rated showerheads, taps, flow-controllers, dual-flush toilets, dishwashers and washing machines; on-site wastewater reuse; and larger scale wastewater treatment and reuse.
  • Energy efficiency initiatives including  use of solar hot water systems, LED or CFL lighting, high energy efficiency star-rated air conditioners, fridge/freezers, dishwashers and washing machines; plus integration of energy (smart) meters and photo-voltaic (solar panel) systems.
  • Selection of materials that are locally sourced, incorporate recycled content or have low-embodied energy where possible; plus preference for materials with low VOCs and toxicity and good environmental ratings (where available).
  • Design of appropriate landscaping which seeks to retain remnant vegetation; incorporates water-wise native plants, high efficiency irrigation systems plus soil conditioning and mulching; takes account of stormwater flows and infiltration; provides outdoor living areas that interface well with the built form and the natural environment; and emphasizes green streetscapes as well as local food production.
  • Community education activities which promote community stewardship of the natural environment and revegetation programmes; community-based food production opportunities, including a communal garden within the village centre; waste reduction and management such as composting and vermiculture; and provision of workshops and support materials on local living and sustainable energy, water and waste practices in the home and garden.
  • A central multi-purpose building which will accommodate a business incubator, senior citizens' centre, playgroup, children’s playground, library, City of Swan customer service counter, café
  • Introduction of “Green Street” within Gidgegannup which encourages businesses to minimise their footprint on the environment. Grey water reuse on parks, public open space etc to reduce the draw-down on scheme water
  • Pathways and linkages from the residential to the village centre to reduce the reliance on cars etc
